How we verify
We are a new publication asking for your time. This is the method, written down, so you can hold us to it.
Where the stories come from
Every Monday we sweep seven sport families. Federation websites, governing-body releases and official results feeds come first. Press coverage comes second. Where the two disagree, we use the primary document and say so.
Every number links to its source
Every figure you read here carries a link to where it came from, inside the sentence rather than buried in a footnote. Longer pieces close with a Where every number here came from block that names the document behind each claim, including the ones we are least sure of.
No single-source stories
If a story has one source and no document behind it, we do not run it, however good it is. Items have been cut from this issue on exactly that basis. Where we are relying on a single outlet's reporting for a figure, we name the outlet in the sentence and we do not harden the number.
We mark our own reasoning
Sometimes we reach a conclusion other outlets have not, or have reached differently. When that happens we say so in the piece, explain what the disagreement turns on, and invite correction.
The cricket piece in Issue 01 does this. Wisden published that Saturday was the second time India had fielded two men's sides in full internationals on one day. We think it was the first, and the article shows why.
Corrections
We will get things wrong. When we do, the correction is published with a date on it, on a page that stays on this site permanently. We do not quietly edit a published piece and leave no trace.
One promise about tone
Every story here ends with a question rather than a verdict. We lay out what happened and show it through four sets of eyes: the fan's, the athlete's, the administrator's and the brand's. What you make of it is your business.
Images
Pictures carry a credit line naming where they came from. Athletes are the subject of our photographs. Officials and politicians are not. If you hold rights in an image used here and would like it removed, write to us and we will take it down.
