Equalled Is Not Broken

Eight of India's twenty-one golds at these Games came from shooting and archery — two sports where nobody runs, tackles or jumps. One of those golds was reported across India as a world record. It was not. Both of those facts deserve more of your attention than the medal table does.

India's women's compound archery team — Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Prithika Pradeep and Chikitha Taniparthi— beat China 238–234 to defend the title India won in Hangzhou. It was a very good score. Several Indian outlets called it a world record.

It was not. The score of 238 equalled a mark South Korea set at Incheon in 2014.

Equalling a record and setting one are different achievements. A record that stands for twelve years and is matched but never beaten tells you something precise about the ceiling of the event. Almost nobody made the distinction. We are making it.

The record was equalled, not set. If we are wrong about that, the correction goes up with a date on it.

What was genuinely new happened on the last day

Kumkum Mohod won the women's individual recurve gold in a one-arrow shoot-off. The score was 6–5. Her final arrow was a ten against Korea's eight.

That is India's first Asian Games individual recurve gold in any gender. India has been contesting the discipline since 1978. Korea has won almost everything there is to win in it.

It arrived with no build-up, in the last session of a Games India began by being written off. It is also the single result in the whole campaign that is hardest to explain as the product of a system. An individual recurve gold against Korea, decided by one arrow, is not something a federation can plan into existence.

Neeraj Chauhan took bronze in an all-Indian match against Dhiraj Bommadevara. Two Indians shooting each other for a medal is a depth signal in itself, and it was reported almost nowhere. In shooting, Neeru Dhanda became the first Indian woman to win Asian Games trap gold. With Kynan Chenai she shot 34 in the trap mixed team, past a Games record of 30.

The arithmetic nobody put on screen

India finished with 21 golds from 85 medals across 20 sports. Here is where the golds came from.

Golds by sport family, 2026 Asian Games, India. Figures locked at 18:00 IST on 3 October.

Thirty-eight per cent of India's gold medals came from two sports where the decisive variable is equipment plus repetition.

That is not a criticism of the athletes. Mohod's last arrow was as hard a thing as anyone did all fortnight. It is a statement about the portfolio.

And the athletics line underneath it is the sharpest number in the dataset. Twenty-four medals, one gold, a 4.2% conversion rate — in the sport with by far the widest participation base in the country.

On Monday, when India had five golds and the national conversation was about decline, all five were from shooting and archery. The precision sports were not the story of a good week. They were the floor under a bad one.

Why precision converts and the rest does not

We can describe the pattern with confidence. We are more careful about the cause, because several of the explanations being offered this week cannot be tested.

What is observable

Shooting and archery are closed-skill sports. The target does not move. No opponent interferes with the attempt. Performance is almost entirely a function of equipment quality, range access and volume of supervised repetition.

Those are all things money buys directly. They are also all things a federation can deliver without solving talent identification at national scale. A country can buy a precision medal pipeline in roughly one Olympic cycle. It cannot buy an athletics pipeline in four.

What we are not going to assert

That the National Rifle Association of India and the Archery Association of India are better run than the Athletics Federation of India. It may be true. It does not follow from these numbers, and we have not done that reporting.

What does follow is narrower and more useful. India's gold conversion is concentrated in the sports where the outcome is most purchasable, and thinnest in the sport where the base is widest.

Four ways to read the same eight golds

FAN

Eight golds is eight golds, and a shoot-off against Korea at ten at night is better television than most of what else was on. The precision sports also have the clearest, fastest scoreboard at the Games.

ATHLETE

Archery and shooting are among the few Indian sports with a predictable domestic calendar, a selection process on paper and equipment support. An archer knows what the next two years look like. A 400m runner largely does not.

ADMINISTRATION

Concentration is efficient and fragile. Eight golds from two federations means one governance failure, one equipment-rules change or one generational gap takes a third of the gold count with it.

BRAND

Precision sports deliver medals and almost no audience hours. That is why their sponsorship is institutional rather than consumer. The commercial upside of the Mohod result sits with her, not with the sport.

If a third of India's golds now come from two sports where the target stands still, is that a system working — or a system that has found the cheapest route to a medal table and stopped looking for the others?

We can argue it both ways, and we have, in this office, for most of today. Reply and tell us which way you land.

Compound team final, 238–234 v China. The Games organising committee's results feed, carried by the Indian wire agencies. The world-record comparison is checked against World Archery's record listing for the Incheon 2014 mark.

Kumkum Mohod, 6–5 shoot-off. Official result. The “first Asian Games individual recurve gold for India” claim is checked against India's archery medal history at the Games since 1978. This is the claim in the piece we would most like a reader to challenge.

Neeru Dhanda trap gold; 34 in the trap mixed team against a Games record of 30. Official shooting results and the Games record table.

21 golds, 85 medals, 20 sports; athletics one gold from 24 medals. The 21/27/37 split and the 85 total are from the Indian Express's day-15 live medal tally for 3 October. The sport-family breakdown is ours, and the working is shown in the Editor's Desk.

If the organisers' closing table differs from ours on any figure above, the correction goes up with a date on it, on a page that stays on this site permanently.
