Two India XIs. Two full internationals. One Saturday.

On Saturday India played a T20 international in Japan and an ODI in Punjab, with thirty different men and two different coaches. So far as we can establish, India has never done this before. Wisden published that morning saying otherwise.

THE TWO INDIA SQUADS, 3 OCTOBER 2026

At ten o'clock on Saturday morning, at a ground in Nisshin, Shreyas Iyer's India beat Pakistan by 19 runs to take the Asian Games gold. India made 211 for 6. Abhishek Sharma hit 61 off 28 balls and Tilak Varma 51 not out off 22. Hasan Nawaz's 96 off 51 was not enough in reply. It is India's second successive men's cricket gold.

About forty minutes after that finished, three thousand kilometres away at New Chandigarh, Shubman Gill's India began the third one-day international against the West Indies. Anshul Kamboj made his ODI debut. The series was already won.

Two India teams. Thirty men, fifteen in each, and not one name on both lists. Gautam Gambhir coached one and VVS Laxman the other. Both matches were full internationals, with official caps and official records, counted by the ICC.

So far as we can establish, this is the first time India has played two men's full internationals on the same day.

One word in that sentence is doing a lot of work, and we should be upfront about it. Day, not moment. The two matches did not overlap by a single ball. The gold medal match finished around twenty past one. The ODI started at two. They were back to back, not simultaneous. Anyone writing that India played two internationals “at the same time” is overstating it.

Wisden says this is the second time. We think it is the first.

Wisden published on Saturday morning under the headline “28 Years On, History Repeats”. It counts 12 September 1998 as the first, when Ajay Jadeja's India played Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur while Mohammad Azharuddin's India played Pakistan in the Friendship Cup in Toronto.

Here is why we disagree, and it turns on status.

The 1998 Commonwealth Games cricket matches carried List A status, not full international status. The ICC declined to grant them ODI status. India did field two senior sides that day. Only one of them was playing an official international. On Saturday, both were.

What changed in between is a rule

In April 2018 the ICC decided that every Twenty20 match between its members would carry full international status, effective for men from 1 January 2019. There is no carve-out for multi-sport events. The test is who is playing, not what the tournament is called.

Which means Asian Games cricket is real international cricket, and the evidence is not theoretical. India's Sai Kishore's record reads “T20I debut (cap 108): 3 October 2023 v Nepal” — a numbered India cap, issued at the Hangzhou Games. Mongolia's entire international history begins at that tournament. And the ICC's own website credits world T20I records to Hangzhou matches: Nepal's 314 for 3, Kushal Malla's 34-ball century, Dipendra Singh Airee's nine-ball fifty.

India is the fourth country to do this

The Hangzhou Games collided with the ODI World Cup in India, and three nations got there first. All three within forty-eight hours of each other.

Afghanistan contested an Asian Games final and a World Cup match on the same day. It remains the most extreme example anyone has produced.

So India is not breaking new ground globally. It is the last of the major Asian boards to arrive here. That is its own quiet story, given it has by some distance the largest pool of professional players to draw on.

One caveat we would rather state than be caught by. Afghanistan and Ireland each played two full T20Is on 20 January 2017, at the Desert T20 in Dubai — a semi-final and a final on the same day. That is one squad playing twice, not two squads in two countries, so we think it is a different thing. But it means “only the fourth time ever” would be too strong, and we are not writing it.

What it actually signifies

The BCCI has thirty men on central contracts. It has just put thirty men on simultaneous international duty, fifteen and fifteen, with no overlap. In headcount, the two squads are the entire contracted list. Across five India teams between 22 September and 17 October, the board will have fielded sixty-nine different players at fifteen venues.

Resist calling the Japan squad a second string

Jasprit Bumrah was in it, along with Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh. India did not split into a first team and a reserve. It split by format. Gill, Rohit, Kohli, Rahul and Jadeja are first-choice in ODIs. The group in Japan is close to first-choice in T20.

There is a reason beyond the medal

Cricket returns at Los Angeles 2028 with six teams per gender. Five places go automatically to the highest-ranked team from each region, on T20 international rankings as they stand on 31 December this year. The Asian Games is not a named qualifier. But its matches carry ranking points, and the Asia slot is settled three months from now. That is a better explanation for Bumrah being in Nisshin than a gold medal is.

The honest problem with Saturday was never the match in Japan. It was the one at home: a dead rubber against a side already two down, played the same afternoon as a gold medal match — and the only one of the two that most Indian broadcasters led with.

Is being able to field two national teams at once a sign that Indian cricket has got deep enough to do anything — or that the calendar has been sold past the point where one team is enough?

We think it is both and we cannot rank them. Reply and tell us which you would put first.

Written at the close of play on 3 October 2026. If our reading of the 1998 Commonwealth Games status is wrong, we will say so, with a date on it, in Issue 02.
